4G/5G RAN optimization and deployment: Sofrecom s network excellence guide
In a context of increasing mobile traffic and accelerated transition to 5G, a European operator turned to Sofrecom’s expertise to oversee the optimization of its Radio Access Network (RAN), prepare for the sunset of 2G/3G, and deploy new 5G NR features. The result: measurably improved quality of service, controlled deployment, and a future-ready infrastructure for tomorrow’s applications.
Context: a network under pressure amid 5G demands
European mobile networks are undergoing unprecedented structural transformation. With sustained growth in data traffic, rapid 5G NR deployments, and the need to gradually phase out 2G/3G networks, network teams face major technical and organizational challenges.
In this environment, a European operator engaged Sofrecom to support a comprehensive program of RAN optimization and parameterization, covering both existing 4G LTE layers and the deployment of the new 5G NR2100 band.
Key objectives identified at project initiation:
- Deploy and integrate the 5G NR2100 band into the existing Nokia RAN infrastructure, ensuring optimal compatibility
- Optimize the Private Mobile Radio (PMR) solution to guarantee critical communication reliability
- Define a cohesive, scalable, and performance-oriented national RAN parameterization strategy
- Prepare for the sunset of 2G/3G: plan the migration of residual traffic to 4G/5G without degrading user experience
- Evaluate and recommend new RAN features to maximize spectral efficiency and QoS/QoE
- Validate configurations through radio tests in experimental zones before nationwide rollout
Methodology: a structured 5-phase approach for risk-free deployment
Sofrecom implemented a phased methodology combining technical RAN expertise, network data analysis, and operational support for the operator’s teams.
1. Integration and activation of 5G NR2100 network
Sofrecom led the configuration and integration of the new NR2100 cells within the existing Nokia RAN architecture. This phase included defining deployment parameters, managing inter-band interference, and validating 4G/5G handovers in NSA (Non-Standalone) mode.
2. National RAN parameter optimization
Based on an in-depth KPI analysis (call success rate, average throughput, handover rate, latency), Sofrecom provided tailored parameter recommendations for the entire country, considering geographic and traffic density variations.
3. Preparation for 2G/3G sunset
The migration of active subscribers from 2G/3G networks to 4G/5G required meticulous planning: identifying risk zones, setting switch thresholds, and establishing post-migration monitoring to detect any coverage or quality issues.
4. Radio testing in experimental zones
Before large-scale deployment, each new feature or configuration change was validated in pilot zones representing urban, peri-urban, and rural environments. Results were analyzed against strict QoS/QoE criteria prior to nationwide rollout.
5. Continuous monitoring and support to UPR teams
Sofrecom provided ongoing operational support to the operator’s UPR (Network Performance Units), with regular KPI reporting and rapid response capabilities to address any detected degradation.
Results: tangible benefits in service quality and network competitiveness
Sofrecom’s support delivered concrete results across all program axes:
| Domain | Achieved result |
| 5G NR2100 Deployment | Successful commissioning with seamless integration into Nokia RAN architecture |
| National RAN Parameterization | Harmonized configuration strategy deployed nationwide |
| QoS/QoE | Significant improvement in service quality indicators in pilot zones |
| 2G/3G Sunset | Planned and controlled transition without notable user experience degradation |
| Nokia RAN New Features | Successful generalization across the entire network |
| UPR Support | Continuous operational support across all parameterization activities |
“Sofrecom’s ability to combine technical RAN expertise, deep knowledge of Nokia equipment, and long-term strategic vision was a key success factor for this program.”
