The two players have signed an agreement to build an intelligent fibre optic network together across the State of Vermont. Spanning more than 1,600km, this network will connect high voltage / medium voltage transmission substations to Vermont’s distribution utilities, enabling information to be relayed about usage, voltage, existing or potential outages, and equipment performance.
IBM, which already participates in over 150 smart grid projects throughout the world as part of its Smarter Planet initiative, will be responsible for providing project management and networking services. The communications network is based on Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Transport platform and its family of Carrier Ethernet Service Aggregation and Delivery switches.
