Tunisia's ministry of communications has selected a bid from France Telecom and Tunisian VSAT operator Divona for a 15-year fixed and mobile telecommunications licence.
The Divona/Orange-France Telecom consortium, which was in competition with Turkcell and three local backers, presented the best technical offer, according to the ministry's statement. The award is provisional until all conditions are met under the terms of the international tender. The winning bidder is expected to start offering mobile services in January next year.
They will compete against Tunisie Telecom, which has over 1 million fixed-line subscribers and 4.3 million mobile customers, and Orascom subsidiary Tunisiana, with 4.2 million mobile subscribers at the end of last year. France Telecom and Divona must now form a Tunisian company which is majority owned by Divona parent Investec.
