IBM extends Smarter Cities Initiative through acquisition of Cúram Software

Cúram Software is an Irish software provider that offers solutions aimed at helping government agencies to improve the efficiency and accessibility of social programmes by avoiding, for example, services becoming saturated. This solution can also be used to continuously monitor progress. It has been taken up by over 80 government agency projects around the world.

With this acquisition, the financial terms of which were not disclosed, IBM extends its ‘Smarter Cities’ initiative. The purpose of this initiative is to help cities and governments to improve the quality of services provided to citizens using data analysis tools. They can therefore anticipate problems and coordinate resources more effectively.

Earlier this year, IBM opened an "Intelligent Operations Center" which provides officials with a unified view of all the information shared by the various city agencies. In October, Big Blue also acquired i2, a specialist provider of intelligence analytics for crime and fraud prevention.

Once the deal is finalised, Cúram Software’s 700 employees will become part of IBM’s Software Group division.
