According to the terms of the contract, the French IT services company will supply around 10,000 shared desktop workstations as well as related services. Atos managed to beat CSC (the previous provider) and BT, which were also being considered for the five-year, £74m (€88.5m) contract.
This deal forms part of the plan to pool IT resources decided by the UK prime minister. It is expected to enable the Department of Health to cut its IT costs by around 40%, and may be extended to other organisations in the UK National Health System. The contract was signed following the efforts made by Atos on the price of its services in the United Kingdom. In 2010, the IT services company signed a framework agreement with the UK government which stipulated lower, renegotiated rates.
